Twice a year, the Global Medical Brigades (GMB) at Marquette University travel to rural, isolated communities in Honduras to provide medical and dental relief to its people. Oral Health Across Nations is partnering with GMB to help coordinate the much-needed supply of oral health products. The people who are treated have very limited access to even the most rudimentary health care. Much of the country is still suffering devastation and high unemployment rates from Hurricanes Mitch and Felix. While in Honduras, clinics are set up where people can come and receive medical and dental care free of charge. The importance of prevention is hightly emphasized and, thus, toothbrushes, toothpaste, vitamins, and educational materials are offereed along with collaboration with the local community on strategies to continue improving the health of its people. The Brigades are coordinated by a well-established Honduran clinic, Sociedad Amigos de los Ninos, which provides the follow-up care for those who are most in need and maintains the critical contact between visits of GMB.
